What is comprehensive car insurance, and why do I need it? As an agent I hear this question all the time. Comprehensive insurance covers your own vehicle in the case of anything happening to it that is not the result of an accident. If a squirrel gets into your car and shreds the upholstery, this is covered by comprehensive. If your car is keyed in a parking lot, this is covered by comprehensive. In some states, comprehensive also covers damage by flood and fire, but as many people found out after Hurricane Katrina, what everybody in the affected areas
